Spotlight on Nick Castine

Tue, 10/11/2022 - 16:46
Coating Engineer
Nick Castine

This month in the blog, meet Nick Castine! A native of Hinsdale, NH (just across the river), Omega was one of his first jobs. Like many of our Engineers, Nick has worked throughout the company and has learned a lot along the way. He is always ready to jump in to help wherever needed.

Briefly describe your position and a typical day.

I'm the engineer responsible for assisting the Specialized Coating team.  My day-to-day varies a lot. You might see me running tests, doing design work, updating MCSs, or working with technicians to improve their processes.

Briefly describe your previous educational and professional experience.

I started Omega as a Soft Coating technician. While working in Soft Coating I got a BA in English & French. Since then, I've worked in Sales, HVP, R&D, and Engineering.

What led you to Omega and why Omega versus other options?

I started at Omega when I was 22. I just needed a job. The challenging work is what kept me here.

What’s your favorite part of working at Omega?

I like to learn - it doesn't matter what the subject is.  At Omega, there are challenging projects and knowledgeable people that push me to learn.

What have you learned since working at Omega?

Everyone is capable as long as they have the motivation.

What Omega project has been your favorite and why?

Steve W. and I worked on a project that required an unprotected Antimony coating on 0.2mm glass. The project was extremely frustrating but once it was finished, we were proud of our work, and I feel like we learned a lot.

Share a fun story about Omega.

When I first started at Omega, I worked 2nd shift, but my supervisor decided to move me to 1st. One of my co-workers jokingly dared me to work a 24-hour shift, from 3:00 pm to 3:00 pm - that way the next day I'd be acclimated to my new schedule. The logic seems insane now that I'm older. I took up the dare and succeeded. I'd advise against it.

What advice do you have for those pursuing a position in your field and/or at Omega?

Don't be intimidated. Try hard. Admit when you're wrong and/or don't understand.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Reading.
